The Texas region proudly hosted its third annual StrenFest from October 11-13, 2024, on the scenic Brazoria County Beach, located between Surfside and Galveston Island. Though the event was small in attendance, it was prominent in camaraderie. Among those who gathered were Jason Whitley (@jkwhitley), Brian Hart (@bhart), and Shawn Presley (@veterandaddfw), all committed to strengthening their outdoor skills and enjoying each other’s company.
StrenFest focused on a wide range of activities. The group practiced critical skills, including fire building, lock picking, rucking, day hiking and backpacking inventories, and outdoor cooking. Each activity provided a hands-on learning and collaboration opportunity, ensuring attendees left with more knowledge and confidence to apply these skills in real-life scenarios.
A highlight of the weekend was Brian Hart’s saltwater fly fishing demonstration. Brian, known for his expertise in the sport, shared valuable insights with the group and showcased techniques for casting and catching fish in the unique conditions of coastal waters. This added an exciting layer to the event, blending skill-building with local Texas resources.
The fellowship extended into the world of aviation as well. Jason Whitley, a licensed pilot, and Brian, who is on the verge of earning his pilot’s license, led an in-depth discussion on the intricacies of aviation. The conversation provided a fascinating glimpse into another layer of their diverse skill sets, and their insights sparked further interest in the potential for integrating aviation knowledge into future outdoor activities.
Perhaps the most memorable moment of StrenFest 2024 came on the final night when the group faced high winds blowing off the Gulf of Mexico. Despite the challenge, they managed to light a campfire, a feat that became the signature moment of the weekend—"As the Comanches would." The success demonstrated the power of persistence, teamwork, and skill—perfectly embodying the spirit of StrenFest.
As the weekend concluded, the group collaborated on preparing an ambitious plan for 2025, focusing on expanding activities within the Texas region. StrenFest will serve as a foundation for an even more engaging year ahead.
